Documents, 1863-1865.

The collection consists of order forms for supplies, receipts for purchases, and official military orders. There are several letters from assistant surgeons Charles Triplett and Vernon Gould. The collection also contains two Receipt Rolls of Clothing for Captain John W. Elam's Company F for items such as trousers and shirts.

Organized in South Bend, Indiana in 1862, the 87th Indiana Regiment was mustered in on 31 August. The 87th saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. While in the Carolinas the Pioneer Brigade became legendary for its construction of roads and bridges. The regiment moved up to Richmond, Virginia and on to Washington City where it participated in General Sherman's grand review. The 87th was mustered out on 21 June 1865.
